TRAIN AND RAIL ACCIDENTS

New York City and New York State subway and rail systems are busy at any given day on any given hour. This is especially true during rush hour and on busy holidays. According to the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA), New York City is home to approximately twenty-five (25) subway routes, 472 Subway stations, in addition to the Metro North, Long Island Railroad (LIRR), and Amtrak railways.

Train and rail accidents can result in catastrophic injuries and even death. As a pedestrian you are no match for these powerful machines and thus you must be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Common Train and Rail Accidents:

  • Assaulting a transit or rail worker;
  • Standing too close to the platform edge;
  • Going on to the tracks / dropping something on to the tracks;
  • Holding the train doors open;
  • Not holding on to the handrails while the train is moving;
  • Subway “surfing” or standing between cars;
  • Pulling the emergency brake for no reason;
  • Not allowing customers off the train before you board;
  • Not making room for customers;
  • Smoking or doing illegal substances on the train.
