Bicycles, electric-bicycles, mopeds and scooters have become popular alternative methods of transportation to mass transit and automobiles throughout New York. It’s become so popular that big corporations such as Uber, Lyft, Revel, and CitiBank, to name a few, are now investing in “share docks” where for a small fee you can have immediate access to ride throughout the city or town you live in.
In 2022, approximately 5,000 accidents involving bicycles were reported according to the New York Department of Transportation. That is nearly 10% of all motor vehicle accidents from New York City that year (which totaled a little over 50,000).
As attractive as these modes of transportation are, it goes without saying, if you were involved in an accident with a larger automobile such as a car, bus, truck, train, or motorcycle, it can result in serious injuries or death.
If you own or ride a bicycle, electric bicycle, scooter or moped, it is important to know what the different classes are as defined by the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC-DOT) when it comes to rules and regulations for these modes of transportation.
