Alternative methods of transportation such as bicycle, electronic bicycles, mopeds and scooters have become increasingly popular.
They have become so popular that corporations such as Uber, Lyft, Revel, and CitiBank, are now investing in “share docks” throughout New York, and around the world, where for a small fee, you have access to rent bicycle, electronic bicycles, mopeds and scooters from the sidewalk or street.
Unlike automobiles, these methods of transportation offer very little protection. According to the New York Department of Transportation in 2022 there were approximately 5,000 accidents involving bicycles, e-bikes, scooters, and mopeds. That is nearly 10% of all motor vehicle accidents from New York City that year which totaled approximately 50,000.
The New York City Department of Transportation (NYC-DOT) has different classes when it comes to rules and regulations for bicycles, electric bicycles, mopeds and scooters. For a complete list of all the information available, click the following link: Electric Bikes & More NYC-DOT
It is also important to know the rules and regulations and the do’s and dont’s, on the MTA website if you decide to take your bicycle on the subway, bus or railway: Taking your bike on MTA subways, buses, and railroads
